{"id":255,"date":"2013-05-28T21:47:08","date_gmt":"2013-05-29T01:47:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/?p=255"},"modified":"2013-05-28T21:47:08","modified_gmt":"2013-05-29T01:47:08","slug":"a-long-awaited-detail-post-stark-elegance-revisited","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/2013\/05\/28\/a-long-awaited-detail-post-stark-elegance-revisited\/","title":{"rendered":"A long awaited detail post. &#8212; Stark Elegance revisited"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in 2011 I posted <a title=\"Stark Elegance\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/2011\/06\/10\/stark-elegance\/\" target=\"_blank\">this shot<\/a> of Jessica and a few people asked me to detail how I accomplished it and how much editing it took.\u00c2\u00a0 I realized that I never actually made that post.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 So, here&#8217;s that post.<\/p>\n<p>NSFW photos ahead.\u00c2\u00a0 <!--more-->Over on another site I frequent, there was a discussion about post processing for black and white photography.\u00c2\u00a0 I shared this photo with them:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-261 aligncenter\" alt=\"Final Image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/5-189x300.jpg\" width=\"189\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/5-189x300.jpg 189w, http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/5.jpg 632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Several people asked me how I achieved this and how much post processing was involved.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Here, in brief, is how I did it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">First I imported and zeroed out the RAW file.\u00c2\u00a0 I always shoot raw for studio work.\u00c2\u00a0 The ability to correct or modify almost every aspect of the color, exposure, contrast, and features of a photo are more than worth the additional space taken up by the files.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I really do not see a reason to ever shoot straight to JPG for any studio work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-257\" alt=\"Imported and zeroed out raw shot. \" src=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/1-199x300.jpg\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/1-199x300.jpg 199w, http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/1.jpg 665w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As you can see, it&#8217;s kind of a lifeless shot.\u00c2\u00a0 First step was bring up the brightness, contrast and correct some of the purple cast to her skin.\u00c2\u00a0 The model here has almost translucent skin and it reflects colors better than some of my backdrops do.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/1.5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-256 aligncenter\" alt=\"Color correct photo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/1.5-199x300.jpg\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/1.5-199x300.jpg 199w, http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/1.5.jpg 665w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The primary change here was an increase in brightness and contrast. I also brought down the reds and blues a touch so her skin would lose the purple cast.\u00c2\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t really affect the black and white rendition, but I like to start with as finished a color photo as possible before moving to the fun stuff in black and white.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Next step is to convert to grey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-258\" alt=\"Converted to Grey\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/2-199x300.jpg\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/2-199x300.jpg 199w, http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/2.jpg 665w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Some of the skin tone loses it&#8217;s luster, but we&#8217;ll fix that shortly.\u00c2\u00a0 Now the real fun begins.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I was going for a very stark, high contrast \/ high key effect with the final image.\u00c2\u00a0 To achieve that, I dove into the tone-curve adjustments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I wanted to bring her skin tone way up, almost to the point of too bright, but did not want to lose the details of her hip bones and subtle shading of her breast.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I set the tone-curve to &#8216;high contrast&#8217; and brought both the highlight and light settings up.\u00c2\u00a0 Highlight was increased about 80 or so and light about 30 or so.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Dark and Shadow Tones I brought way down to about -60 and -90 each.\u00c2\u00a0 This pulls the black coat and dark backdrop way down into black and pushes her skin tones way up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-259\" alt=\"Tone Curve adjustments\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/3-199x300.jpg\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/3-199x300.jpg 199w, http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/3.jpg 665w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We&#8217;re almost finished.\u00c2\u00a0 I cropped it slightly to balance the &#8216;weight&#8217; of her white skin against the lighter tones of the backdrop, giving the backdrop a bit more weight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-260\" alt=\"Cropped\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/4-189x300.jpg\" width=\"189\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/4-189x300.jpg 189w, http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/4.jpg 632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The change is subtle, but noticeable.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The only remaining issue is one I didn&#8217;t correct until just a few months ago when revisiting another set of photos from this set.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The model has exquisite, black hair.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 That disappeared completely in the original b\/w treatment here.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 So with a little bit of brush work, her hair comes back.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-261\" alt=\"Final Image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/5-189x300.jpg\" width=\"189\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/5-189x300.jpg 189w, http:\/\/www.dreamlandvisions.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/5.jpg 632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One bit of photoshop work was done (amusingly AFTER I had a 19&#215;24 print of this on the wall at a gallery show) to this image.\u00c2\u00a0 I used photoshop to remove her birth control patch.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 If you didn&#8217;t notice it in the photos above, you&#8217;ll understand why I missed it too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So there you go, 2 years late, but delivered as promised.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Back in 2011 I posted this shot of Jessica and a few people asked me to detail how I accomplished it and how much editing it took.\u00c2\u00a0 I realized that I never actually made that post.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 So, here&#8217;s that post.
